Head hunters

You won’t find a look-book here, or clinical white walls. No people magazines or commercial radio, but an easy-rock soundtrack: welcome to an off-the-wall hairdressers’, determined to stand out from the crowd. “We do customized cuts here, everything starts in front of the mirror, to check out hair condition… and find out what kind of look the customer really wants,” explains Anthony, co-founder of “d’un ciseau neuf-1609”.

“Then, it’s up to us to come up with ideas, not to copy catalogue images, but to be creative, spontaneous, to restyle hairstyle, add a touch of modernism.” Well, that’s cut and dried. As for the rest, Anthony is really passionate about his job, having started out with a standard training course, and going on to be reshaped and restyled by Toni & Guy in Paris, “a concept ‘made in England’ and a hairdressing academy where I learnt everything all over again, and where everyone goes back to basics, irrespective of their experience”. He finished the course full of new ideas for opening his own salon in Pau, four years ago. “I wanted a space that felt a bit like a loft apartment, but nothing elitist. What makes me really happy is when customers tell me that they arrive early to enjoy the environment I have created.” Customers chatting around a big table while their colour takes, but they’ll never catch a glimpse of a hair curler or a hood dryer! “In 1609, we think about the hairstyle, but we also think about customers having to recreate it in the morning in front of their own mirror! We opened a barber’s corner to follow the hipster trend, and because it takes great precision to bring off the stylishly-neglected look” Anthony adds. That’s Damien’s prerogative. Having arrived in Pau quite recently, he discovered here a really open-minded clientele, a wind of change, a thriving city,” while Laurène enjoys being the only woman in the salon, though she’s “not girly at all!” Anthony’s employees have to have “style, high standards, and a determination to progress”, and he readily takes David, Damien, Laurène, Thomas, Rudy and Lony with him to master classes so that they can perfect a technique. Tuesdays are training days in the salon. “I’d really like to develop the artistic side of the salon, create a design lab, with a photo studio, a working space. That kind of stimulation is essential.” Cool on the outside, but staunchly professional on the inside, Anthony confesses a real fashionista penchant, and a strong taste for decoration and travel, but is adamant about having his own philosophy and making) his own choices. Like the decision to use several different brands, Shu Uemura “the exclusive end of haircare products and shampoos”, Schwarzkopf hair dyes or Label.m hair texturizers. Unisex, trendy, but not bling-bling, his salon exudes an optimistic, uplifting atmosphere. What more could you ask for after a visit to the hairdressers?!
